Hospice Frequently Asked Questions
Hospice is a philosophy of care that focuses on comfort, rather than a cure, for anyone with a life-limiting illness. Hospice focuses on “quality of life” issues. It focuses on caring. Hospice services are provided wherever the patient calls home whether it be a private home, assisted living apartment, or nursing home. Finally, hospice provides support to help meet the patient’s, family’s, and caregivers’ physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
Many people with a serious illness use hospice care. A serious illness may be defined as a disease or condition with a high risk of death or one that negatively affects a person’s quality of life or ability to perform daily tasks. Examples of serious illnesses include dementia, heart failure, chronic obstructive lung disease, and cancer.
Despite the benefits of using hospice care, many people wait to receive hospice care until the final weeks or days of life. It is important to talk with your doctor about your illness and how your disease is progressing. Starting hospice early may be able to provide months of meaningful care and quality time with loved ones.
Hospice does nothing to speed up or slow down the process of dying. Hospice care manages symptoms and discomfort for the best quality of life and to minimize suffering. Choosing hospice does not mean death is imminent. Hospice care neither hastens death nor prolongs life but instead allows for better quality of life.
Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances pay for hospice care.
Hospice care can provide a range of different services depending on your symptoms and end of life care wishes. You will be assigned a care team consisting of the following disciplines: Nurse, Hospice Aide, Social Worker, Chaplain and Physician. Others may join your team as needed and desired, such as: a trained Volunteer, Music Therapist, Pet Therapist and Grief Support.
A Hospice registered nurse is available via telephone 24 hours a day. Hospice staff members do not stay with the patient 24 hours per day. We provide clinical, emotional and spiritual support through visits. As your condition changes we will provide more frequent visits, as well as supporting, educating, and training your caregivers.
- An interdisciplinary care team: Care is provided, and services are coordinated by an interdisciplinary team consisting of a physician, nurse, social worker, and chaplain, as well as other specialists such as pharmacists and nutritionists.
- Financial coverage: 100% covered through Medicare, medical supplies are covered, as well as durable medical equipment, i.e. hospital bed, walkers, and wheelchairs.
- We support the patient, the caregiver, and the family. We do not want anyone to walk their journey alone.
